Depression Rehab Centers That Take Insurance

Depression is a common mental health disorder. It impacts 17.3 million adults each year in the U.S, or 7% of adults. Those who suffer from the symptoms of depression have all aspects of life involve. This includes including relationships, career, and school, and daily functioning. Of those with depression, 10 million people each year, or 64% of the total, will experience a severe version.

One of the barriers to treatment for major depression is the belief that it costs too much. People may assume that treatment is not covered by insurance and is therefore outside their reach. This causes them to not seek the help they need.

In fact, out of the millions of adults struggling with major depression, only 35% receive help from a mental health worker. In truth, group or private health plans and Medicare cover treatment to some degree.

The effects of not getting expert help for depression are serious. Depression can worsen over time, even making someone disabled in some cases. When people suffer for a prolonged time they are at risk for self-harm or suicide. Since 1999 there has been a connection found between rising rates of depression and rising rates of suicide.

Insurance companies have responded. They now offer coverage for depression treatment.  The depression rehab centers that accept insurance have grown greatly since passage of the Parity Act of 2008. This is the law that mandates equal weight be given for mental health and physical health treatment. No longer can insurance plans charge higher co-pays or apply strict limits on mental health treatment.

Symptoms of Major Depressive Disorder

A case of the blues, that follows an upsetting or stressful life event, is not the same as major depression. According to the DSM-5, five or more of the nine symptoms lasting for more than two weeks, indicates depression.

  • Depressed or sad mood
  • Recent weight loss or gain
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling hopeless and despairing
  • Lack of interest in things once enjoyed
  • Feelings of guilt or shame
  • Slowed thinking and movements
  • Thoughts about death or suicide

When someone has at least 5 of these symptoms for over two weeks they should seek out help. The doctor can first rule out a medical issue that might be causing the symptoms. If there is no health problem they will be referred to a mental health provider.

Treatment for Depression

Treatment for major depression starts with medication and one-on-one therapy sessions. For those who do find relief with this combo, symptoms begin to subside after a couple months. About 50% of patients respond to the drug. Others, though, may not be able to handle the side effects.

Side effects may include weight gain, sexual issues, dry mouth, blurry vision, fatigue, irritability, and nausea. There are some treatment options available, such as TMS. Other options for depression treatment include daily exercise, a better diet, and actions such as yoga and keeping a journal.

When Inpatient Depression Treatment is Needed

Depression is a highly complex mental health issue. Many factors may have contributed to it. When depression symptoms worsen despite the treatment received, a more focused treatment approach may be needed. A residential treatment rehab offers more focused treatment in a safe setting.

More intense treatment is needed when someone can no longer function because of the impact of the symptoms. Often, these patients are unable to even leave the house. They may rather sleep all day or isolate themselves. This only makes the problem worse.

Chronic and severe depression can lead to job loss, relationship strife, and health problems. The person could become so full of despair that they might attempt suicide.

When someone’s depression continues to worsen, a rehab program may be the best level of care. These depression treatment rehabs provide acute stabilization and 24/7 monitoring. Meds are reviewed and tweaked as needed, and a blended approach for treating the mental health issue is offered. This involves one-on-one and group therapy, and other activities.

These may include art and music therapy, massage, deep breathing techniques, yoga classes, mindfulness, and more. Insurance plans may cover much of the care, but each health plan is unique.

Outpatient Depression Rehab Centers

For less severe depression, an outpatient rehab center may be the answer. These offer some of the same treatments as an inpatient program, but the patient will reside at home. The outpatient programs also function as a step down from residential depression treatment. This helps keep the patient engaged in aftercare for a period of time, which can help them adjust back to normal life.

Outpatient depression programs include group and family therapy, one-on-one therapy, and other activities. Such are mindfulness training, art therapy, yoga, and other experiential therapies. Insurance for outpatient rehab is often accepted for at least some of the costs that pertain to treatment.
